The Layouts tab allows you to place a field to a specific layout with just a few clicks. To have this functionality available, open any object file and navigate to the Layouts tab in the editor.
In case, if your project does not contain any layouts, you'll see the message, that there is no data to display. In order to work with the layouts, you need to pull them from the org.
Content of the Layouts tab
Layouts tab represents all data related to the fields placement on the layouts. Information is displayed in a table, where the rows stand for fields in the current object file, the columns stand for layouts, where these fields are present.
The cells in the table show the current settings of placement for the particular field on the particular layout and the section, where the field is placed:
- Hidden — the field isn't shown on the layout,
- Edit — the field is visible on the layout and can be edited,
- Required — the field is visible on the layout, it can be edited, and it is required for this layout,
- Read-only — the field is visible on the layout, but it can't be edited.
To avoid hiding important information, the Field Name column and the Layout Name row are frozen when you scroll, so you'll never get lost in monotonous data.
You can filter fields or layouts, using the controls above the table.
- First off, the text input Filter fields… helps you to filter all the fields to match your search request.
- The Unassigned only button shows only fields, which have
Hiddenor nothing set for all layouts. In addition, these rows are highlighted in red color in the table.
- The Filter layouts button opens a window, where you can select, which layouts you want to see in the table (all the rest will be hidden from the table).
In this window, you can check necessary layouts — the filter is applied immediately. Use a search input or buttons Select all / Select none for quick filtering.
The last filter option is an ability to filter fields. Click on the filter icon in the 'Field name' column header, and you will get a filter window.
This filter remains active even when you close its window. To cancel the filter, open it one more time and click the Clear filter button.
Setting placement of a field
First off, you need to set a status of visibility for a field on a layout. You can do this in three different ways:
- the drop-down list of statuses,
- the context menu of a cell,
- the Quick Actions section.
After this, you need to select the section for placement of the field. Click on the drop-down list and select the necessary one.
NB: If the field has the Hidden status, it won't have the ability to set the section.
The column Quick actions next to the Fields column gives you the ability to set the same visibility for the field on all the layouts with just one click.
The same quick actions can be accomplished from the context menu, either it's a field or a layout.
You can also use the Quick actions buttons under the Layout Names. In such a case, clicking on a status icon applies this status to all fields on this layout. When you select a section in the Quick actions, all the fields will be placed in this section of the layout.
Edit layout in the org
If you want to switch to the web editor of a layout, you can accomplish this action from the context menu of a cell or a layout's header. Right-click and select the Edit layout in the org option. You'll get an opened web browser with the direct link to edit selected layout.
Edit XML file
In addition, you have an ability to switch directly to the layout file to make all the necessary changes and checks. Right-click on the Layout Name and select the Edit XML file from its context menu.
All the changed statuses (either you changed them manually or by applying settings for a set of fields / profiles) are highlighted in yellow.
To save your changes, click the Save & Deploy button at the top of the window — it saves the changes locally in the layouts files and deploys them to the org.
You can also revert changes by the Reset button. This action cancels your changes and rolls back the table to the last saved state.
NB: In cases where the deployment has failed, you'll see the appropriate message in the Error List panel and in the status bar. All the cells that you've changed still will be highlighted, but at the same time, the changes in the layouts files will be saved. To revert your changes, you need to set the changed cells to their default states. As an alternative variant, you can do the following: navigate to the Project metadata components, uncheck the layouts files that you want to reset and check them again; then Pull from Salesforce to get these files.
Bulk apply to
You can easily duplicate settings for some field or layout to other ones with just a few clicks. Right-click on a header of a necessary field or layout and select the Bulk apply to… from its context menu. In the opened window check the items that should have the same settings of visibility and placement. You can also find an item using a search input above the list and select all or select none of the items with the help of corresponding buttons.
To save the settings, click the Apply button.
